Over at his blog Entartete Musik<\/a>, my pal Gavin Plumley links to Alan Bennett\u2019s piece in the London Review of Books in which our playwright muses that it\u2019s much easier to choose the eight records he wouldn\u2019t <\/em>want on a desert island than those he would. Both he and Gavin are ready to chuck out, among other things, Mussorgsky\u2019s Pictures at an Exhibition <\/em>and a spot of Mozart. (By the way, Minette Marrin has an interesting review of Bennett\u2019s The Habit of Art <\/em>here at Standpoint <\/a>which makes some interesting points about Britten that a lot of people are too reverential ever to voice, but that\u2019s another matter.)<\/p>\n

My anti-desert island list would include:<\/p>\n

Tchaikovsky\u2019s 1812 Overture<\/p>\n

Orff Carmina Burana<\/p>\n

Everything by Bruckner<\/p>\n

That silly old recording of the Brandenburg Concertos on early instruments by the English Concert, made before they could play the objects properly. <\/p>\n

Britten Death in Venice<\/p>\n

Stravinsky Pulcinella<\/p>\n

Elgar The Dream of Gerontius<\/p>\n

On a totally different tack, thanks to everyone for the brilliant response on Twitter to Zimerman\u2019s Chopin Ballade yesterday! Glad you all loved it as much as I did, so we\u2019ll have some more very soon.<\/p>\n
