I have a piece in today\u2019s Independent about the new classical series at the Roundhouse<\/a>, \u2018Reverb\u2019,<\/a> from 22 to 31 of this month, aimed at cool 20-somethings. The crux is: to stop patronising them and give them good music, well played in a relaxed and familiar atmosphere. <\/p>\n

But somewhere in the cutting process we appear to have lost the bit about being able to take your drink into the auditorium. This little \u2018you-can\u2019t-do-that\u2019 detail of concert-going matters \u2013 it would make the atmosphere more relaxed and familiar, and actually most \u2018grown-up\u2019 concert-goers would like it too. <\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think any of us really enjoy being effectively strapped into the centre of a row unable to move one milimetre for an hour. It would be ever so easy to implement a you-can-drink policy, since most venues \u2013 eg Barbican or RFH \u2013 are equipped for it and allow it in other types of event. It\u2019s only classical concerts where you can\u2019t. And, as we know, young Brits like to drink\u2026 <\/p>\n

That would help, plus better lighting, and a few words from performers to audience before the music starts. It\u2019s not the music that keeps youngsters away, the OAE told me, it\u2019s the way it\u2019s presented. We\u2019ll see if the Roundhouse has cracked it, but wouldn\u2019t it be funny if it turned out it really is that easy after all? <\/p>\n
